Choosing an engagement ring can be one of the most stressful things a man will ever have to do. Also keep in mind the fact that one of the most important things to any woman is the size of the diamond within the ring. One thing that most men do not know when choosing is that the design of the engagement ring can have a big effect on just how good the diamond looks and most importantly how large the diamond appears to be.
Shallow cut diamonds have become very popular in recent years, the main reason for this is the fact that they often look much bigger in certain lights compared it to deep cut diamonds. However bear in mind that the sparkle in shallow cut stones is greatly reduced because light travelling through the stone tends to go right to the back instead of bouncing around the sides and out again.
A more traditional approach is to go with an illusion setting which involves using her mirror like plate inside the band to reflect more light from the back of the stone. Illusion settings are thought to be one of the cheapest ways to enhance any natural diamond however the plate can sometimes become damaged and it is also expensive repair.
I have also long been a fan of side stones which while not necessarily increasing the size effect of the ring can look quite stunning if designed in the right way. The idea with side stones is always to reflect the light back into the centrepiece diamond to create that real sparkle effect that everyone wants.
One myth that i am not so keen on is that weird shapes such as pear drops and even ovals make your average diamond look much bigger. I can’t really vouch for this method myself as ive always been a fan of the traditional circle arrangement. As you can see there’s almost too many things to think about when it comes to choosing jewellery, however trust your instincts and you should be fine!
